P Jordan: Underwater Cultural Heritage

I am mentioning all these because you cannot talk about South African underwater cultural heritage without Cape Town or the two oceans that converge here. UNESCO's adoption of the UCH Convention was in way an affirmation of UCH as an integral part of the cultural heritage of humanity. In conclusion, I want to state that South Africa will be working towards ensuring that Underwater Cultural Heritage issues are taken up at our regional and continental bodies such as SADC and the African Union... P Jordan: Crafts award dinner

The forthcoming Confederations Cup and the 2010 World Cup offers all South Africa's craft sector a unique opportunity. I am certain that South Africa's crafters have and are preparing themselves to take advantage of this once-off opportunity and are producing souvenirs and other craft products that the visitors will find worth spending their money on. South Africa has unique and innovative products with considerable product diversity. [highlighted result]

P Jordan pays tribute to Cecil Skotnes

As Minister of Arts and Culture it was with sadness that I learnt of the passing away of the internationally renowned artist, Cecil Skotnes this week. From 1952 to 1966 Cecil Skotnes taught art at the Polly Street Art Centre, in Johannesburg, which was virtually one of the only places for black artists to receive training until the appearance of Rorkes Drift Centre in northern KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) in the late 1960s. Cecil Skotnes is deeply admired and leaves a rich legacy through his ... [highlighted result]

P Jordan: Opening of Tropics Views from the middle of the globe exhibition

For many decades what was available in Art History Books tended to be Eurocentric, reflecting the dominant position the countries of Europe occupied in world affairs during the 19th and twentieth centuries. The Art history of the rest of the world has remained relatively invisible and tended not be recognised. This exhibition begins to address this firstly by putting the pre-modern art works on popular exhibition and secondly, by giving artists from many parts of the world a chance to exhibit... One of the "unsolicited" documents I received at that meeting contained a prospectus for an Encyclopaedia of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ESAACH). The ESAACH prospectus broke the subject down to its component elements namely, the verbal arts, the performing arts, the visual arts and other aspects of South African heritage from antiquity to the present. Nation building: To foster a sense of pride in and knowledge of all aspects of South African culture, heritage and the arts [and to] encourage ... [highlighted result]

The Minister of Arts and Culture Dr Z Pallo Jordan has strongly criticised the publishing industry for failing to promote books in indigenous African languages. Jordan was speaking at a function to launch the re-issue of South African classics at the National Library in Pretoria last Monday. P Jordan: Indigenous languages literary classics launch

Virtually from the day I assumed office as Minister of Arts and Culture in June 2004, I entered into a rather fruitless dialogue with our South African book publishing sector. Owing to circumstances well-known... [highlighted result]

P Jordan: Sod turning at first theatre building in Soweto

The absence of a physical building, housing a theatre does not mean that there was no theatre among Sowetans. The erection of a theatre complex is a vindication of generations of theatre practitioners who, against all odds, persevered and brought theatre to townships like Soweto. In our day, South African theatre has once again taken the world theatre by storm as sheer entertainment with breathtaking revues like "Umoja", "The Lion King" and "Kat and the Kings" The reception these productions ...
